2. Barnaby Jones
Barnaby Jones, portrayed by Buddy Ebsen, was an older gentleman who had run a private detective agency in Los Angeles for many years. He retired and his son Hal together with Hal’s wife Betty took over the business. Hal is murdered while investigating a case so Barnaby comes out of retirement to find the killer of his son and to help his daughter-in-law run the PI business.
Barnaby Jones is a soft-spoken, folksy fellow. Unlike some hardboiled detectives, if you see Barnaby at a bar conducting an interview he is more likely to be drinking milk rather than alcohol.
Since he was a little older Barnaby Jones was not one to engage in fistfights with a perpetrator. Instead Barnaby would manage to either get the drop on the bad guy or maybe he would use a judo hold to quiet down the villain or he might slap a door into the villain’s gun hand forcing the gun to drop.
The Barnaby Jones series ran on CBS from 1973 to 1980. Lee Meriwether was featured in the role of Betty Jones, Barnaby’s daughter-in-law.
