16. Gene Roddenberry got half the royalties for the Star Trek theme
Not content with producing, writing, re-writing, and pretty much creating Star Trek in the first place, Gene Roddenberry demanded even more of the Star Trek pie.
Which he did. By ensuring he got 50% of any royalties from the theme song. Part of Gene Roddenberry’s contract was a clause that said if he wrote lyrics for a tune (even if they weren’t used) he would get 50% of royalties.
So even though Roddenberry’s incredibly silly and somewhat un-singable lyrics for the Star Trek theme were never heard on screen, he got a 50/50 split with composer Alexander Courage. Needless to say, Courage was not too happy about it.
