17. Leonard Nimoy improvised the Vulcan nerve pinch
You probably already knew that Nimoy came up with the “Live Long and Prosper” hand symbol by borrowing from a thing his Rabbi had done at the synagogue. Something you may not have known, is that Nimoy also invented the famous neck pinch.
There was a scene in “Enemy Within” when he was supposed to knock out the rambunctious Captain Kirk. Nimoy didn’t like the idea of his character, Spock, using unnecessary violence, so he pitched the notion of the nerve pinch, and Shatner agreed to try it out.
Because Shatner was so convincing at stage-fainting, the director approved of the pinch, and so the Vulcan nerve pinch was born. The production team didn’t even know about it until they saw the daily film the next day.
