18. Gene Roddenberry was a speechwriter for the LAPD
You might have known that Roddenberry was a has-been cop before he got into television, but did you know he wrote thoughtful and eloquent speeches for former L.A. Chief of Police William H. Parker?
Parker was in the process of “modernizing” the LAPD at the time. In short, he was trying to militarize the police with new equipment and organization, which arguably led to some LAPD’s most controversial moments in the years that followed.
Guess who helped sell the militarization to the public? That’s right…Roddenberry.
