19. Smoking saved James Doohan’s life
James Doohan, aka Scotty, was shot 6 times storming Juno Beach on D-Day. Doohan, a Canadian, led his men through a mine field and personally took out two German snipers, and eventually took four shots to the leg, one to the chest, and 1 to his hand.
That one shot to the hand ultimately resulted in him losing his middle finger. The shot to the chest would have been fatal except that he has a silver cigarette case in that exact spot, given to him by his brother, which deflected the bullet. Eventually he gave up smoking, but at least he could say that smoking actually saved his life.
In addition to James missing a finger and surviving fix bullets, James Doohan can be attributed with primitively developing the Klingon and Vulcan Language. Later, these languages were expanded and refined by professional linguists, primarily by Marc Okrand.
