“Beam me up Scotty” has been an iconic phrase for over 50 years. Wouldn’t you be surprised to know that William Shatner never actually said the phrase during his time on Star Trek. I’d hate to burst your bubble, but the closest he ever got was “Scotty, beam me up.
”Many people are shocked because the popular line is universally and intrinsically tied with the show. So, how did this start, you ask? It’s hard to say. But, there is a theory that these types of TV/movie misquotes occurs when the way they are remembered sounds smoother than the actual quote.
For example, “Beam me up, Scotty” flows better than “Beam us up, Mr. Scott.” Over the years, the misquotation can become so popular that they are thought of as the original phrase.
