20. Spock was supposed to be more…different
NBC studios was nervous about Spock from the very beginning with his high angled eye brows and pointy ears. Many would have described it as, devilish, which just wouldn’t fly in good god-fearing sixties America.
Therefore, those traits were airbrushed out of early publicity photos. Roddenberry also envisioned Spock to have bright red skin and a metal plate in the middle of his stomach, but was met with a lot of resistance.
The final nail to the coffin of this red skinned Spock occurred when Nimoy didn’t want to spend as much time in the make-up chair. Makes sense to us…
