4. A big fan of Star Trek was Dr. Martin Luther King and he saved the character Uhura
Nichelle Nicols played Lieutenant Uhura. She was among the first African American women to be casted in an important TV role other than the stereotypical black maid or nanny. She also participated in the first interracial kiss seen on TV.
Surprising, she had planned to quit the Star Trek series. What convinced her to change her mind was a chance encounter with the civil rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King.
He told her he was a big fan and reminded her that she was a symbol of accomplishment for all fans of color. It was that fateful conversation that inspired Nichols to stay, and what ultimately saved the character Uhura.
